This dissertation investigated how Geographic Information Systems can improve transport planning and management in Kisumu County, Kenya. Road networks, public transit routes, and population distribution data were integrated into a spatial database to model accessibility gaps.
Network analysis techniques were applied to calculate travel times, identify underserved communities, and simulate the impact of proposed road improvements. The study incorporated both primary GPS field data and secondary data from Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
Results were visualised as interactive choropleth and thematic maps, providing county planners with actionable spatial intelligence for infrastructure investment decisions.
Data gaps in rural road networks required extensive GPS field verification across 4 sub-counties, coordinating with local chiefs for access permissions.
